In Fiction paragraphs encapsulate an image, and if one sees narrative as a succession of images, then paragraphing manages the flow of the narrative much like cuts in film manage the narrative flow visually.
In Essays paragraphs encapsulate a point and the development and support of that point.
Thus, consider your paragraphs as a break in sense. A resting place for your reader to consider your point before moving onto the next point.

ILLUSTRATION
ELABORATION / EXPLANATION
The concept of Paragraph PIE is usually taught with “E” standing for explanation. However, often the illustration (such as a statistic) does not require much explanation. Therefore, it is better to think of “E” as elaboration, where the writer develops the point by “working out” the connections to other points or the thesis.
This is the hardest part of writing, and using the word “elaboration” reminds us that writing clearly is hard work.
